Prolonged downtime of key features

Hello everybody,

TipiT has gotten a lot of attention recently. We are very glad about that. Most of this attention has been positive but a significant part of it has turned out to be fraudulent. These fraudulent attacks are taking its toll on the site to a degree that operation is not sustainable right now.

We will be disabling creation of new tips and tipjars until we figure out a way to solve this problem in a scalable fashion. Payment out remains possible but may be subject to delays to screen for fraud.

We apologize for the inconvenience and we thank you for your patience.

Thanks,
The TipiT Team

Ok, I understand the situation. When will we receive further info about payouts that are currently in progress. For example I have one that was requested on the 14th of this month.

There are a lot of security issues that need to be address when you are talking about handling money and transactions on the web, this problem has been present for a long time. I myself I’m a developer and have had a lot of experience working with financial institutions and online payment systems, If I can be of any help just let me know.

  2. Alexander van Dijl Says:

Wow, its too bad you didn’t inform us ahead of time. I now have to switch to another service and completely change part of my website.

  3. alper Says:

@Alexander: Apologies again. The decision was recent and was prompted by recent events.

  4. Hector Minaya Says:

    @Alexander,

Beware of using paypal to acept donations, they only permit it for registered US charities, otherwise hey will eventually freeze your account and any funds on it.

  5. Michael Leuthner Says:

    @Alexander

moneybookers.com is a reputable company with more favorable terms than pp.

  6. Mike Miller Says:

wow that sucks, just finished a song called “the end of the bad guys”
we wish huh, will keep hoping.
Hope you guys get on top of this, I like your site and the idea behind it.
so good luck and best wishes.
    peace

  7. Tom Says:

how long do you estimate it will take before tipit can accept donations again? days? weeks?

  8. alper Says:

@Tom: As it looks right now, definitely weeks.

  9. Kawika Says:

What a drag for you guys! Best of luck figuring it out!

  10. Jules Bonnot Says:

You guys need to waive the minimum balance for payouts, since a lot of us now have money in our tipjars with no way of pushing them over the minimum. You don’t want to become tantamount to PayPal by effectively seizing people’s money with no warning.

  11. alper Says:

@Jules: We are looking at what is in the system and screening for malversations. We will also indeed look into an agreeable way to settle the money in the system. Please stay tuned.

  12. Kensoh Says:

Really looking forward to see TipiT active again.

  13. Jules Bonnot Says:

Guys, it has been quite a while now. We’d like to get our money out.

  14. alper Says:

@Jules: Get in touch and we’ll make suitable arrangements for your case.

  15. DucDigital Says:

Seam like it will be months of “prolonged downtime”

  16. Dave Bushong Says:

This is sad for me. My volunteers spend all of their time comforting terminally ill patients, sitting bedside, and many of the families and friends have asked for a way to show their appreciation for their efforts.

And yet some people are abusing TipiT just so that they can have their fun, play a prank, or cheat the system.

To me, that is like throwing a brick at a parade. Yes, you proved you can do it, oh great master of the internet, wonderful wizard of mischief, but meanwhile, innocent people are suffering due to your little joke. Are you happy? Now that you have broken things here, would you please move on and find a new place to damage?

My thanks to the crew at TipiT, and I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude for the work you are doing to get this problem fixed. Thank you!

    Dave
